Someone forgot to tell John a, “You can’t do that!”. They should have told him…No way can you build a townhome community by building each townhome with the same level of customization you’d build a high-end custom home….so he didn’t know.

That’s why the community, Millhaven Landing, is a neighborhood of single level, fully custom-designed townhomes, rising superbly in a serene area off Griffith Road not too far from Winston-Salem’s Hanes Mall. Hodges had listened to the people visiting his model Sales Center. Many of them are empty-nesters or early retirees, usually moving from elegant homes of 5,000 square feet or more.

The ease of one-level living that Millhaven Landing offers appealed, but what he kept hearing was that no one wanted to down-grade when they down-sized. Hodges heard a common thread: these homebuyers want to keep most of their furniture and acquisitions of the years, ranging from family heirlooms to Christmas decorations. They also wanted to customize their new home to fit their preferences…. More windows here…a door over there…a larger dining room or a flowing great room.

Unlike Hodges, who didn’t realize that developers just “can’t” offer this kind of custom home in a townhome design, most of those homebuyers entering his Sales Center HAD heard just that: You can’t customize a townhome.

Hodges set out to correct that misassumption: he began offering townhomes that are an upgrade, or step up, for the homebuyer moving from an estate home. Floorplans are fully customized to fit each buyer’s needs. Some want more wall space; others, more windows, and some… want both. Hodges and his team do whatever is necessary to provide the home that the savvy, sophisticated homebuyer wants and expects.

The first step is to thoroughly analyze the new home’s design, with an eye toward efficiency of space. A homeowner with even a 6000-7000 square foot home can find that a smaller 2,000-3,000 square foot floorplan fulfills all their needs…if its properly designed to suit their needs. But this is just the beginning. Hodges allows the most extensive array of custom finishes possible. Not only does the design showroom have a wide selection of finishes; the homebuyer can elect to use any finish or product in the marketplace, bringing a truly custom approach to their townhome.

The entire process begins with Julie Nusdeo of Keller Williams Realty, the point person who greets you upon arrival at Millhaven Landing’s model Sales Center. Julie’s years of experience and engaging personality help you determine if the Millhaven Landing townhome community is a good fit. If so, she works with you and construction supervisor Brian Riker to develop the best floorplan for your new townhome.

It’s important to note that Brian Riker is a longtime local builder who constructed exclusive custom homes for his own company. When he and Hodges connected, Hodges saw an opportunity to make his vision of a custom-quality townhome community… a reality.

Once a floorplan has been developed, Julie stays with you throughout the process of selecting finishes…from floor coverings to light fixtures… using selections from Millhaven Landing’s extensive Design Center which includes top quality manufacturers such as Jeld Wen (doors and windows), and James Hardie (siding) etc. The cabinetry is all custom built by local craftsmen at Dixon Cabinetry and Hodges. Riker and Nusdeo are always on the lookout for local suppliers that can offer extraordinary products for your new home.

Melanie Page of Page Interiors is the interior design professional and another key team member that steps in to help with final selections. Her design knowledge, coupled with an awareness of today’s trends, assures your home will be state-of-the-art, yet always feel like home.

Many of the quality aspects of these townhomes remain unseen or under-realized until years after you move in. For example, Hodges installs a very expensive product called ZipWall as an underlayment for the home exteriors. As he explains, it’s like wrapping your new home in a rubber suit, eliminating moisture and providing benefits that many homeowners may not appreciate for years to come. Energy efficiency and low maintenance are quality points that Hodges insists upon including in every home to provide comfort and easy maintenance.

Once you’ve moved into your new townhome, a tight-knit community of neighbors will welcome you with invitations to social events and club outings.
